Use of artificial illumination to reduce Pacific halibut bycatch in a U.S. West Coast groundfish Bottom trawl
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the U.S. West Coast groundfish bottom trawl fishery, Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis) bycatch can impact some fishers’ ability to fully utilize their quota shares of groundfishes. this study, we compared catch efficiency for and four commercially important species between an illuminated non-illuminated trawl. The caught significantly fewer sablefish than For Dover sole (Microstomus pacificus), petrale (Eopsetta jordani), lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus), individuals However, difference was not statistically significant. Physiological data collected on in trawls show blood levels cortisol, a stress hormone, were higher fish absence differences condition factor or fat content. While our results have obvious implications findings could also potential applications Alaska British Columbia, Canada fisheries where occurs.

متن کاملNorthwest Fisheries Science Center West Coast Groundfish Observer Program Limited-entry Trawl Report
Objective The West Coast Groundfish Observer Program (WCGOP) collects at-sea data from limited trawl and fixed gear fleet as well as from open access nearshore, prawn, and shrimp fleets. This information is vital for determining the amount of discard and total catch of groundfish species in this region. This report summarizes discard data collected by the West Coast Groundfish Observer Program ...
متن کاملImplications of Bycatch, Discards, and Size Limits on Reference Points in the Pacific Halibut Fishery
The current harvest policy for the Pacific halibut fishery uses a 32-inch minimum size limit in the directed commercial fishery, and total annual catches in each of the eight regulatory areas are based on area-specific exploitation rate targets. In nondirected fisheries retention of halibut is prohibited. Post-release survival rates are gear dependent and partially based on observer accounts of...
متن کاملAn Approach to Quantifying Scientific Uncertainty in West Coast Stock Assessments Groundfish & CPS Subcommittees
Quantifying scientific uncertainty in estimating an appropriate catch level for a fish stock is challenging. Multiple sources of error can easily be identified, including measurement error that is conditioned on the adopted model, model specification error, forecast error, and uncertainty about overall stock productivity. In addition, there are without doubt other unknown factors that will nega...
